Richard practices in all areas of IP law, with a focus on computer-related, electrical and mechanical patent preparation and prosecution. Other areas of Richard’s practice include:

• patent validity, infringement and freedom-to-operate opinions;
• technology transfer and licensing agreements; and,
• strategic counseling of clients about IP portfolio planning, development and management

Richard is actively involved in the legal community, and is a member of both the computer law and the young lawyers’ subsections of the British Columbia Branch of the Canadian Bar Association. Richard is also a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada, and is currently serving on the Patent Law Harmonization, Information Technology and Copyright Technical Committees. He enjoys teaching and has lectured on various aspects of intellectual property law at the University of British Columbia and University of North British Columbia.

Richard’s educational background and practical experience provides a solid foundation for his current practice. Prior to joining the firm as an articling student in 2000, Richard studied law locally at the University of British Columbia and abroad at the University of Copenhagen. He also has experience studying and working in the United States where he studied physics at the University of Washington and was involved with grant-supported research projects at the Pacific Northwest Laboratories.
